In accordance with Section 22(c) and Part V of the Local Government Reform Act, 2014 to elect the Cathaoirleach of the Athlone Municipal District to hold office until his/her successor shall have been appointed in accordance with law.

Councillor Ward welcomed everybody to Curraghboy for the Annual General Meeting of the Athlone Municipal District.  He thanked the Executives and Staff for their support and co-operation during his term as Cathaoirleach.

The Cathaoirleach invited proposals for the election of Cathaoirleach.

It was PROPOSED by Councillor Kilduff

           SECONDED by Councillor Naughten

that Councillor Laurence Fallon be elected Cathaoirleach.

It was PROPOSED by Councillor Connaughton

           SECONDED by Councillor Ward

that Councillor John Keogh be elected Cathaoirleach.

A vote was taken on the election of Cathaoirleach which resulted as follows:-

VOTING FOR THE ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR FALLON:-

Councillors Kilduff, Fallon and Naughten (3)

VOTING FOR THE ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR KEOGH:-

Councillors Connaughton, Keogh and Ward. (3)

Majella Hunt, Director of Services, informed the members that in accordance with the Local Government Act, 2001 lots have to be drawn to determine the successful candidate in the event of a tie.  It was agreed to proceed with the draw and that the first named person drawn would be deemed elected as Cathaoirleach of Athlone Municipal District.  Both names were placed in the draw.  By agreement Ms. Majella Hunt was nominated to draw the name.  Cllr Lawrence Fallon was the first name drawn and he was deemed elected by the Members. 

Councillor Ward then vacated the chair and Councillor Fallon assumed the position of Cathaoirleach of Athlone Municipal District.

Councillor Fallon thanked Councillor Ward for all his work over the last year.  He thanked his proposer and seconder.  He outlined the issues facing the Athlone Municipal District.  In particular, Cllr. Fallon outlined that the roads issue is one of the main challenges in the next twelve months.

The Cathaoirleach invited proposals for the election of Leas-Cathaoirleach.

It was PROPOSED by Councillor Keogh

          SECONDED by Councillor Ward 

It was AGREED that Councillor Paddy Kilduff be elected Leas-Cathaoirleach of Athlone Municipal District.

On behalf of all the Staff, Ms. Majella Hunt, Director of Services thanked Cllr. Ward for his work and leadership as Cathaoirleach of Athlone Municipal District.

All members congratulated Cllr. Fallon on his election as Cathaoirleach and wished him well for the coming year.  Best wishes were extended to Cllr. Paddy Kilduff on his election as Leas-Cathaoirleach and said it was fitting for his last year.
