Provision of a road safety improvement scheme at Ballyleague

In accordance with Section 179 of Planning & Development Act 2000 (as amended) and article 81 of Part 8 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 (as amended)

Provision of a Road Safety Improvement Scheme at Ballyleague

John Freeman, Senior Executive Engineer, Roscommon County Council presented the report on the Part 8 Road Safety Improvement Scheme at Ballyleague.  There were two formal submissions, both from Ballyleague Pastoral Council and agreement was reached with Roscommon County Council on accommodation works to facilitate the scheme.

 

The project was welcomed and supported by the members.

It was AGREED by all the members to approve the Part 8 Road Safety Improvement Scheme at Ballyleague.

Feedback from the Town Team Meetings

Minutes:

Cllr. Fitzmaurice gave an update from Castlerea Town Team

  • After the Rose Festival they will be moving forward with the Town Teams projects
  • Appreciation for the Municipal District Funding awarded recently
  • €73,000 has been awarded by the Community Recognition Fund for works at Castlerea Pool and work is ongoing

 

Cllr. Brennan gave an update from the Roscommon Town Team

  • No meeting of the Town Team took place, but the subgroups have met
  • Edenville House subgroup have made good progress with the Thrive Funding application
  • A Town & Village Funding application was submitted for paths at the Jail Lane & Loughnaneane Park
  • Work has been done on flowers with the Tidy Towns group
  • Work is ongoing for the Christmas Festival
  • They supported the Youth Event at Roscommon Golf Club
  • They are planning to support the Pride Weekend and the Brazilian day
  • Expression of Interest was submitted to Leader for the Christmas Festival
  • A Fáilte Ireland application has been submitted for funding for the Christmas Festival
  • The Roscommon town Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) launch took place, and it was a very successful event

It was AGREED to write to the Road Safety Authority requesting details of road traffic accidents that occurred on national and regional roads within the Roscommon Municipal District since January 2025 highlighting that this data is essential for informed decision making and for implementing measures to prevent future accidents.

Votes of sympathy were sent to the families of the late Michael James Kelly, Ballinlough and the late Michael Creighton, Frenchpark.

Minutes:

Under AOB the following points were discussed –

  • Request for a slip lane at the Four Mile House turn off for Strokestown
  • A query regarding outdoor equipment at Loughnaneane Park
  • Reduced visibility at Behy due to an overgrowth of wild rhubarb
  • Line marking of 2 disability spaces at Gorthaganny Church
  • 12 headstones that were damaged in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea and Irish Public Bodies want all details and costings to be sent to them separately for each headstone
  • Relining of 5 green one-hour spaces at Main Street, Roscommon and paying for it out of the public realm funds

 

Tom McDermott, Municipal District Co-ordinator responded to the issues raised-

 

  • The process has started to install a new junction at the Strokestown road turn off and he will get an update from the Roads Department for the next meeting
  • The outdoor equipment is being upgraded
  • Tom agreed to visit Behy and look at the wild rhubarb as it needs to be sprayed again this year
  • Roscommon County Council are waiting for the lining company to come in and do the works
  • The issue of the damaged headstones needs to be brought up at the Plenary meeting as it relates to other cemeteries throughout County Roscommon

 

The members discussed the revised project put forward by Hawthorne Drive Residents Association and the insurance difficulties.

It was AGREED by all the members to seek clarification from the group regarding who will carry out the work, communicate with the Irish Public Bodies Department within Roscommon County Council regarding the insurance query and put the item back on the agenda for the next meeting.
